Henderson State failed to find consistency on offense and fell Thursday night
against Ouachita Baptist in Arkadelphia, Ark., dropping to 0-6 in the Gulf South
Conference and 7-12 overall by a final score of 80-52.
The Reddies (7-12, 0-6 GSC) could not get anything going offensively in the first
half, only hitting 9-of-29 shots from the field. Henderson State was outrebounded by
six (20-14) in the first 20 minutes of play. The Tigers made 57.7% of their shots in
the first half, hitting on 15-of-26 attempts, and led HSU 38-27 at the break.
Lance Smith led the Reddies with seven points at the half, while Marland Johnson
added five.
Ouachita Baptist (5-14, 1-5 GSC) had five players score at least five points during
the first 20 minutes, including Scott Day who led all scorers with eight.
OBU began the second half on a 7-2 run to stretch its lead to 16 points and
controlled the action throughout the final 20 minutes of play with a strong
defensive effort, holding HSU to 28.3 percent shooting in the game and outscored the
Reddies 42-25 in the second half.
The Reddies made only 3-of-15 three point shots in the game, while OBU made 9-of-18
from long distance.
Smith finished the night with 19 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Reddies, but
only made good on 7-of-17 free throws.

figures including Day (13), Emmanuel Engulu (11), Olden Jordan (12), and Julian
LeDay and Belford Williams who each added 10 points.

Delta State Saturday in Arkadelphia with opening tip set for 4 p.m.
Lady Reddies Earn Key Road Win at Ouachita Baptist, 79-76
Jan. 28, 2010
By Cody Qualls

Henderson State picked up a huge road win on Thursday night at Ouachita Baptist in
Arkadelphia, Ark., defeating the Lady Tigers by a final score of 79-76. The win is
the Lady Reddies' first road win in the Gulf South Conference since a win at
Southern Arkansas in Magnolia on Feb. 14, 2008.
HSU guard Malorie Marshall (18 points) made two free throws to give HSU a 79-76 lead
with ten seconds remaining in the game, and a three pointer by OBU's Melissa
Richardson was off target.
Junior Jazmine Ellis had the best game of her career at Henderson State, leading the
Lady Reddies to the key win with 30 points and 10 rebounds, connecting on 7-of-13
shots from the field and 3-of-5 three point field goals.
The win improves the Lady Reddies' (12-9, 3-3 GSC) chances of a birth in the GSC
postseason tournament tremendously, as the win moves the squad into sole possession
of the fourth position in the GSC Western Division with eight games remaining.
Ouachita Baptist (10-9, 2-4 GSC) took the lead early in the game behind hot shooting
from behind the three point arch, connecting on 7-of-17 shots from three point
territory. Both teams shot better than 40 percent overall in the first 20 minutes of
play, while Henderson State got the lead by forcing 12 Lady Tiger turnovers in the
first half of play including 12 steals.
Overall, the first half was close in most aspects, as the 44-38 score would
indicate. Henderson State out rebounded OBU 19 to 16, and scored one more point at
the foul line than did the Lady Tigers.
Jazmine Ellis led the scoring at the half with 15 points on 3-for-4 shooting from
behind the arch, while Malorie Marshall added 11 points during the first 20 minutes
of action, including seven from the free throw line.
Gabby Coleman led all scorers at halftime for Ouachita Baptist with 18 points on
7-of-14 shooting from the field. A'Laeshia Adams added nine OBU points.
Henderson State began the second half with the six point lead, and maintained it
throughout the first few minutes of action. Ellis scored four early points for Hsu,
but the Lady Tigers responded and cut the Reddie lead to three points, 55-52 with
12:04 remaining in the ballgame.
But an offensive rebound and put back by Janisha Young followed by an Ellis layup
extended the HSU lead to nine at 65-56 with 7:41 remaining.
But two quick Ouachita Baptist three pointers in under a minute by Adams quickly cut
the Lady Reddie lead to four points with 6:51 left on the clock.
The game was close down the stretch, and senior Danyelle Harris, the Lady Reddies'
leading scorer on the season, made two free throws to stretch the HSU lead to 77-72
with 51.7 seconds remaining.
Ellis fouled out of the ballgame with 31.4 seconds remaining, and OBU's Melissa
Richardson made both of the free throws to cut the HSU lead to 77-76 with 31.4
seconds on the clock.
But Henderson State took care of the basketball and made key free throws to ice the
game late and earned the three point win.
The Lady Reddies had four players score in double figures, including Ellis (30
points, ten rebounds), Marshall (18 points, 12-of-15 free throws), Harris (12) and
Janisha Young (10).
Adams led OBU with 22 points, while Coleman scored 21, but was held to three points
in the second half.
The Lady Reddies will look to carry the momentum from this big road win into its
home GSC game Saturday when the team will play host to #2 Delta State (16-1, 5-1) in
Arkadelphia, Ark. with opening tip set for 2 p.m.

By Cody Qualls

The Henderson State swimming and diving team with honor four seniors at Saturday’s
home meet against Austin College, as the meet will be the Red Wave’s last home meet
of the season before the squad prepares for the Conference Championships Feb. 10-13
and the NCAA National Meet March 10-13.
Red Wave head coach Coak Matthews looks forward to the opportunity to honor his
seniors. “These four seniors have meant so much to our program, and we really want
to send them off in style,” he said. “I am confident that the four seniors and the
rest of the team will swim very well on Saturday, which will create an exciting
meet. I am asking for all Reddie fans of any sport to please come by the Wells pool
at 1:00 this Saturday to support our seniors as we recognize them prior to the
meet.”€ť
Henderson State will honor the accomplishments of Ozden Sari, Allison Kliewer,
Amanda Kliewer, and Chris Slininger.
Sari (Edirne, Turkey) is the most decorated female distance swimmer in school
history, as she holds school records in the 1000 freestyle and the 1650 freestyle.
Sari will be swimming in the 1000 free this weekend, and Matthews said that the
senior has an opportunity to qualify for the National Meet this year. Sari will
graduate with a degree in business administration and marketing.
Allison Kliewer has been an All-American swimmer at Henderson State the last two
seasons, qualifying in the 200 medley relay last year. Kliewer is a three-time
Conference Scholar Athlete selection, and is also one of the top performers on the
Lady Reddie cross country team and finished in the top 50 in the 2009 Gulf South
Conference Cross Country Championships. A team captain, the senior from San Antonio,
Texas received the Bobby Cullen Memorial Scholarship this year, one of the most
coveted awards for any senior Red Wave swimmer. Kliewer is a family and consumer
science major.
Amanda Kliewer, the older sister of Allison, qualified for the National Meet last
season in the 400 freestyle relay, and again qualified this season in the 200
freestyle relay event. Amanda came to Henderson State after taking a short break
from swimming, and overcame a broken hand to earn All-American honors. Kliewer, a
Conference Scholar Athlete from San Antonio, Texas, plans to join the Army and
become an officer after she graduates with her degree in English.
Slininger (Azle, Texas) is the only male senior on the Red Wave this season, and is
a team captain. Slininger has been named a Conference Scholar Athlete all four years
at Henderson State, with a 3.65 cumulative grade point average, as a Pre-Med Biology
and Chemistry major. Matthews praised Slininger’s work ethic, dedication and
responsibility that he has shown both athletically and in the classroom.
“I am so proud of the accomplishments of these four seniors, and give thanks to the
Lord Jesus that He has given me the opportunity to know and work with each of them.
It is a very difficult thing to balance swimming and academics, especially for 4
years, and each of them has done a wonderful job.”

Reddie Baseball and Softball Players Selected to Preseason All-GSC Team
Jan. 27, 2010
By Cody Qualls

Henderson State is featured prominently in the 2010 Preseason All-Gulf South
Conference Baseball and Softball teams, announced Tuesday.
The Reddie baseball team features four Preseason All-GSC Selections, while the
Diamond Reddie softball team has one player selected.
The baseball selections representing Henderson State are junior Kendal Norman (Hot
Springs, Ark.), junior Robert Gilbert (Jasper, Texas), senior Jonathan Dooley
(DeQueen, Ark.) and senior Evan Eary (Batesville, Ark.).
Norman started 45-of-47 games last season at catcher, hitting .321 with 53 hits
including 15 doubles. Defensively, Norman was second on the team with 259 putouts
and had a fielding percentage of .983.
Gilbert hit .318 last season and totaled 36 runs batted in. The first baseman hit 21
doubles in 2009 and is on pace to set the Henderson State all-time record for
doubles in a career. Gilbert was one of the Reddie offensive leaders with a slugging
percentage of .517, and also earned a .994 fielding percentage.
Dooley hit .309 last season, totaling 43 hits in 139 at bats, including nine doubles
and six home runs. Dooley was third on the team with 70 total bases and was the only
regular starter for the Reddies that did not commit a single error in 2009 while
playing in the outfield.
Senior pitcher Evan Eary finished 2009 with a record of 5-2 and a 3.33 earned run
average in 16 appearances for Henderson State. Eary allowed 51 hits in 46 innings of
work, totaling 40 strikeouts.
The baseball squad also features three players selected as top newcomers for the
upcoming season. These players are pitcher Nathan Eller (Sherwood, Ark.),
outfielder/pitcher Gip Hendrix (Haughton, La.) and outfielder Bobby Tatum (Pine
Bluff, Ark.).
Henderson State was also mentioned in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper’s Preseason
Top 40. The Reddies did not make the top 40, but did receive four votes in the poll.

The Reddies finished last season 34-16 overall and 10-11 in the GSC last season,
missing the postseason tournament by only one game. The Reddies are picked to finish
fifth in the GSC Western Division in the Preseason Coaches’ Poll. HSU received three
fourth place votes and four fifth place votes in the poll. Southern Arkansas
received all seven first place votes, as the Mule Riders are picked to finish just
ahead of Delta State in the West.
The Diamond Reddie softball team features one preseason All-GSC selection, while the
softball team also has three players listed as top newcomers for the upcoming
season.
Second baseman Ashley Ray was selected to the All-Preseason team. Ray (Wynne, Ark.),
who was a Second Team All-GSC selection a year ago, started 52-of-53 games and hit
.282 on the season with 44 hits including six doubles. One of only three sophomores
to make the All-Preseason team from the Western Division, Ray led the team with 24
walks in 2009.
The three Henderson State softball players selected as top newcomers are Brittany
Benedict, Katy Gorsage and Amber Klug.
Benedict pitched last season at Abilene Christian, starting 10 games and earning a
record of 5-5 with a 4.34 ERA, including five complete games. Benedict totaled 24
strikeouts in 51 innings pitched.
Gorsage played her high school softball in Rowlett, Texas, and is expected to bring
a good, quick bat to the Diamond Reddies. The catcher, who is also expected to
spend some time playing in the outfield as well, led her high school team to a
birth in the quarterfinals as a senior, and competed against strong competition in
the 10-5A District.
Klug helped lead Kingwood High School to an undefeated District 19-5A title and a
second round playoff appearance last season, and was selected as the most valuable
offensive player in the district.
The Diamond Reddies finished last season 20-34 overall and 9-21 in the GSC. HSU is
picked to finish fifth in the GSC Western Division, receiving one third place vote,
three fourth place votes and two fifth place votes in the Pre-Season Coaches’ Poll.
Arkansas-Monticello is picked to win the West, while Arkansas Tech is picked to
finish second.
